First Sinophone Europe Conference: Exploring Cultural Expressions and Sinophone Identities in Europe

The richness of Sinophone cultural expressions and identities will find a space for deepening and dialogue in the Sinophone Europe Conference, to be held on 13 and 14 December 2024 in Florence, Italy. This event represents a milestone for symphonic studies in Europe, emphasising how symphonic culture develops and intertwines with European contexts.

First Sinophone Europe Conference

The main objective of the conference is to deepen symphonic studies in Europe, creating a bridge between researchers exploring symphony ‘from’ and ‘in’ Europe. The conference aims to better define the concept of Sinophone Europe as a complex space where cultures, histories and identities meet and evolve.

Day 1 – December 13, 2024 @ La Colombaria

The opening day will be hosted by the Accademia Toscana di Scienze e Lettere ‘La Colombaria’ and will be attended by academics from all over the world.

Highlights of the first day:

    Discussions on literature and Sinophone identities in the European and global context.
  • Panel 2: Movies
    Exploration of symphonic cinema and its distribution in Europe.
  • Panel 3: Art
    Analysis of symphonic artistic production in Spain, Germany and Italy.

Day 2 – December 14, 2024 @ FORLILPSI, University of Florence

The second day will be hosted at the FORLILPSI Department of the University of Florence.

Highlights of the second day:

  • Keynote Speech
    E.K. Tan of Stony Brook University will offer a unique perspective on the voices of the Chinese diaspora in Europe.
  • Panel 4: Identity
    Themes of performance art, identity politics and migration were at the centre of the discussions.
  • Panel 5: Literature II
    Insights into symphonic literature translated and adapted in Europe.
  • Panel 6: Linguistic Expressions and Community Building
    Analysis of the role of language in the construction of Sino-speaking communities in Europe.
